  My apologies - I have no advice I could provide related to compiling
on Windows, but I'll be glad for any patches you might provide if you
figure it out. :-)

  Windows compilation is controlled by the WIN=1 setting near the top
of the Makefile; a comment nearby mentions mingw so I'd go with that.

  That would be awesome!  I have some Debian packaging experience so
I could help with some of the work, I just don't have the time to do
it all myself from scratch.  I'll be happy to carry at least some
baseline Debian packaging within the upstream repo in a debian/
